Music is something that is in our every day lives. You may perform it. You may listen to it. You may criticize it. The fact remains that music is an almost unavoidable part of living life. But just because it is unavoidable, does that make it necessary? Is music really a crucial part of life? I say absolutely.
At its core, music brings people together. It is a tool for building community, creativity, and culture.
Music is truly an international language. At each course weekend I know that I won’t be able to speak to everyone in his or her native language, but that doesn’t stop me from being able to appreciate all the music we share in classes like Evolution of Music. There is so much diverse music that exists in the world and I am lucky enough to learn so much of it from teaching at these weekends.
Children that take music lessons also perform better in other subject areas. It was Plato who said “I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning”. The performance of music also provides an opportunity to boost confidence in performers (not to mention it is a pretty amazing feeling to play music for a crowd of listeners). I encourage anyone, young or old, to pick up an instrument and give it a shot. The joy that comes from performing music is a unique experience and yet it can be shared across the world.
At its core, music brings people together. It is a tool for building community, creativity, and culture. I know music has had a huge impact on my life. So……why music? Because without art, earth is just eh.
